"I TEACHED HIM TO TALK'' ; STORIES OF CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

by Marion VanArsdell, M.Ed., C.A.G.S.

“I Teached Him to Talk”: Stories of Young Children with Autism chronicles two years in the life of a classroom for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This creative non-fiction book grew out of the author’s work designing and implementing a program that would meet the specialized needs of pre-school children with ASD within a public school system.

In this series of stories, the reader watches young children who are often mystified by language struggle to make sense of the world around them. The stories relate a shared journey as children and teachers build relationships that change them all. Information on the program model as well as reflections and insights about teaching practices is imbedded in the narrative as the reader witnesses the progress of individual children. The stories bring readers into the classroom and allow them to see and hear the children as they begin to make sense of the world around them and build connections to teachers and other children.

This book will be a valuable and engaging resource for parents, teachers and therapists who are looking for answers to the question, “Where do we begin and how do we reach young children who learn in such different ways?” Most importantly, the stories in this book offer hope and reassurance to families and teachers that their efforts and creativity can help children move from isolation to interaction.
